Learning

June 7, 2007

I just came back from a vacation to the United Kingdom. During my trip i visited Christ College Oxford which is one of the Oldest Educational Institution in the World.  The tour guide was talking about how both in Oxford and Cambridge you do not have to write exams to clear school. The professor meets you on a weekday and gives you a topic and asks you to go and reaseach on the topic for a week and meet him back. Then Debate with Fellow students on the Topic and through it Learn.

I was amazed by this concept and stared to think about the whole concept of learning for Higher studies.

The best way to learn about anything is go and gather information about it, both Positive and Negative  , Good and Bad in equal quantity. If you have managed to gather only good information about anything you probably like the subject a lot and are too biased towards that and have not looked at the other side at all. If you have managed to gather only bad information then you hate the subject. If the quantity you gathered is small then you have not looked at the subject in detail.

Therefore to learn, to educate yourself you need to find both Good and Bad about things and in balance for you to get the complete picture which will be somewhere in the middle .

Pritam and Rock Band Crap!!!!!

May 9, 2007

Life in a Metro is the currently Hyped Hindi Film that is using all of Shilpa’s Bootalicious publicity to get a good opening. Another thing they are touting is Pritam “I am a music arranger not a composer” Chakraborthy’s Rock band and their live performances tours. When they said they are forming a Rock group and are going to play live music in all the key cities,  i was thinking finally Hindi music i s coming of age , and then when i look at this song and video i realize its all a bunch of Crap. This is supposed to be a live Rock Performance. Take a look at this video. There is no drums, Pritam and the other guy behind him are playing Chords and the song is playing lead riffs. The only one who looks like doing the song live is the Singer. It looks clearly that they are doing Karaoke like Jessica Simpson.

Inimey evenavathu Hindi Move Live Rock Performancennu sollittu vandhennganna…… manavaey !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Respect the Giraffe

May 9, 2007

Hey buddy on the picture….you Giraffe. I always thought you are a gentle creature, sort of like Inzamam-ul-Haq. Taking your own time to move you big body. Lazing around to tree hopping.

But i did not know until today, you can come after someone , much like what Inzy did in Toronto a few years back. I fear you …..I respect you.

For those who want to mess with you…I can imagine them getting chased by you…a 30 ft tall animal , coming full steam at them…….All they can do is

RUN TO THE HILLS…..RUN FOR THEIR LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here is the the Front Page Story in Lithuania’s national paper today…..

“Climbing into a giraffe’s cage at the local zoo seemed a good idea after a few drinks. But the prank went wrong when the 1.3-ton animal flew into a rage and attacked the three student trespassers at a zoo in Lithuania on Monday night.

Ruta Greiciute, a 22-year-old student at Kaunas Technology University, was hospitalised with a broken collar bone and nose after the nine-year-old male giraffe, named Solut, attacked her.

The other students survived the incident unscathed.

“This was a very silly thing they did. The scared giraffe could have stomped her to death,” Kaunas Zoo spokeswoman Angele Grebliauskaite said.

The zoo reported that many animals were disturbed on Monday night as students celebrated a festival in a nearby condominium.

Police have launched an investigation to find out how the intoxicated students entered the zoo at night and climbed the 10-foot high fence surrounding the giraffe cage.”

Watching cricket in Indian Television Channels

March 16, 2006

Simon Barnes in times writes about watching cricket on Indian Televisions “On Indian television, any moment when they give you an actual programme is bitterly resented by the station and is regarded as a wasted opportunity. So, naturally, there were adverts between every over. You were never off duty, always being nagged at, harried, pestered, or flirted at by lovely girls with rupees in their eyes. On the occasions when the station was forced to show you the actual cricket, it kept up its interest with little pop-ups and ad-bars and sly little captions, all reminding you of things you can buy. Despite all this, I was, naturally, enjoying the cricket. ” Simon you haven’t even experienced the tip of the pain that we used to experience watching on Doordarshan 10 years back. Typically in one day games we used to watch 4 ball overs. The advertisements will start before the last ball is bowled and they will continue till the first ball as been completed. We were also so used to wacthing the doordarshan news come on with the match tantalizingly poised. You were also not priviledged to hear the commentary of greats like 1. Dr.Narottam Puri who used to reel of statistics like ” That ball was defended by Sachin exactly the same way as Gavaskar defended on the 4th ball of the 3rd over of the 2nd day of the 1st test match between east africa and india in 1978″.. 2. Abhay Chaturvedi … Errr i only remember him being hyper whenever someone hits a boundary screaming on top of his voice ” Char Runs” 3. Madan lal (not the ex cricketer) … This guy had an accent that would put the call center employees into shame. All i remember was to this day is him bungling some of the names of the visting cricketers.

A Missile in a mantra

March 14, 2006

I was amazed when i was reading an article on missle technologies in Vedas.  If we take a look at the wars in Ramayana and Mahabaratha  we think of the warfare in today’s concept. For e.g Brahmastra is like a  nuclear weapon – “As by releasing nuclear weapon there is radiation, similarly, we have got description that when Aswatthama released his brahmastra, there was a big radiation, people were feeling very terrible heat”.

For our sages to have even visualized a missile techology 6000 years ago ( even of you term the puranas as stories) is something that is really amazing.

Also just like the heat seeker there is Sabda-vedhi whcih means if I throw some arrow, it will go to the enemy wherever he is. A little sound of the enemy will attract this weapon, and it is sure to kill the enemy.
